Colorado Springs, CO—Figure skaters take a break between training sessions at the Colorado Springs World Arena Ice Hall to decorate hundreds of delicious, freshly baked sugar, chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies for donation to the Destiny Project, Cheyenne Mountain Community Center and the Manna House. With lots of laughter, excitement and creativity, skaters, their moms and additional participants, spread frosting, making colorful angels, Christmas trees and candy canes.
Annually, the Broadmoor Skating Club members participate in numerous community volunteer efforts, such as the Waldo Canyon Fire fund raising event held at the World Arena.
“There are so many pre-packaged, store bought gifts given to good causes during the holiday season, we wanted to do something different, so we decided to make fresh frosting and cookies,” said a Skater Mom. This event is in its second year and has risen to over 30 volunteers, producing 700 cookies for donation. Skater moms initiated the idea a few years ago by making frosting, making and baking cookies and cutting them into Christmas shapes in their homes. Last year members of the Skating Club were encouraged to get involved and they produced a little over 200 hundred cookies to give to the Marian House. Cookies are divvied up in individual bags, and then placed in boxes to be distributed to community organizations that make a difference in the lives of at-risk children, and people going through hard times.
Events like these help teach kids how ideas can become reality, and demonstrate how acts of generosity can warm their hearts and fill families and children in the community with appreciation. It's a win, win for everyone involved.
