The next PIKES PEAK OPRY SHOW AND DINNER is September 29th at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Owner and band leader Ronnie Cook was with the Flying W Wranglers for 13 years and now continues to entertain in a different venue. The BBQ meal is excellent. The entire family will enjoy the show with great music and comedy. For prices and times call 719-683-7865.

they do.

I did not see much coverage of today's events on the network news channels this evening, probably because it was quiet and uneventful. I wonder if the "kiss day" the protestors are planning for Friday will be a different story. I also have to suspect, due to past behaviors, that their event may not be as calm and peaceful as our show of support was today. They are sure to be out with their picket signs covered with words of hate and judgment. I find that very sad indeed.

Master Groomer Educates Clients

By Debbie Evert

You haven’t bathed in weeks. It’s been a while since you even brushed your hair. Taking a look at your feet, it’s obvious you haven’t clipped your nails in some time.  The rash that showed up a few months ago isn’t going away. No, these aren’t the latest statistics for the down-trodden in the city, but they do define the average pet.

“As a pet owner, we don’t always provide the best care,” said Becky Taylor, owner of Tailored Tails Grooming Salon & Pet Spa.

When she realized this was the average for most pets and their owners, she decided to do something drastic. Taylor recently completed her studies at the National Cat Groomers Institute of America.

Taylor holds a unique title in Colorado, the United States, and even the world. She is the only Certified Feline Master Groomer in Colorado, one of 43 in the U.S., and one of 59 in the world.

After a 15-year corporate career, and 15 years as a stay-at-home mom, this go-getter “wanted to do something [else] that meant something.”

She had groomed her own pets for several years but realized few grooming salons would take cats.

“As a dog groomer, I swore off cats!” Taylor said. “I thought they were too much trouble. I believed the myths. But I also thought if I can’t handle cats, the problem is with me.”

Taylor purchased the NCGIA curriculum and studied for a year. Then she put her study skills to the test and went to institute’s headquarters in South Carolina to take the written and practical exams.

According to www.nationalcatgroomers.com, the NCGIA was formed in the spring of 2007 for the purpose of setting and maintaining cat grooming standards, providing training and education, and awarding certification when training requirements are met. It is the original feline-specific groomers’ association.

Grooming is only one element of the institute’s curriculum. The students also studied feline behavior, health, and CPR training. The NCGI of America accepts only eight students per session and hosts five sessions a year.

Taylor uses her training every day at her salon. Cat owners have gone to her salon with several of the same issues as a result of living with a cat. One common problem is hairballs.
“Cats are very fastidious about grooming,” Taylor says, “but what most people don’t realize is that cats do not groom themselves, they lick themselves.”

During the process of licking, cats deposit saliva and ingest large amounts of shedding hair, which compound the problem for hairballs. Regular grooming can eliminate this and other problems.

“Cats are double or triple coated, meaning they have both guard hairs and undercoat hairs,” Taylor says. “We like to compare this to birds or ducks that have larger outer feathers that ‘guard’ the body and protect them from outdoor elements.”

Even when cats lick, humans need to help in the process of getting rid of dead hair.

“When the dead or dying hairs are not removed, your pet loses the ability to insulate the body. In addition, the follicle can become clogged preventing the sebaceous gland from doing its job, producing oils that moisturize and nourish both the hairs and the skin. Allowing that dead hair to clog the follicle will cause dry skin and a dull coat, and the coat may become tangled.”

The groomers at Tailored Tails will make a determination what de-matting process is best for your cat based on condition, coat type, age, health, and temperament.  Once the mats are removed (either by regular comb de-matting or by shaving off the matted coat), keep up with the regularly scheduled appointments to ensure prevention of future matting. Most cats will need to be groomed every six weeks.

Reducing or eliminating hairballs is only one problem area in which Taylor and the groomers at her salon can help cat owners. The staff at Tailored Tails isn’t just about great products, clippers, and dryers. When you take your pet to this salon, you will get an education.

“It is not our intent to insult you or your pet—we really do care!” says one of the many brochures offered to you as a client. Information about hairballs, matting, dental/periodontal disease, nail trimming, and weight are some of the options for further learning. Although the information is researched carefully and factually correct, clients are encouraged to consult their veterinarian of any condition of their pets.

One very satisfied customer appreciates the information and extra care.

“I was very amazed,” says owner Kim Straughter, “not just at the way Yoshi looks, but that Taylor genuinely cares” about her clients and their pets. “Yoshi looks phenomenal.”

Yoshi, a three-year-old Maine Coon mix, helped Taylor practice her grooming techniques.

Straughter has referred Taylor and the groomers at the salon to friends.  She appreciates the time the staff takes to educate pet parents on what to look out for and how often to groom at home and to take their cats to a professional groomer.

One of the reasons regular grooming is important is so clients can spend time petting and loving their pets.

“A groomed cat is a happy cat,” says one of the brochures, but it’s also the philosphy of Taylor and her staff. That goes for dogs as well.

For more information about Tailored Tails Grooming Salon & Pet Spa, contact Becky Taylor at 596-TAILS.
According to the NCGIA, cat owners are faced with the following problems. Many have come to accept these myths as truths.

Long, sharp claws that tear at their furniture or their skin.

Litter stuck in the cat’s paws.

A smelly cat.

A matted cat.

A cat with dreadlocks.

A cat with waxy ears and matted knots around the ear area.

A cat that smells like urine.

A cat that has fecal matter stuck to its hair.

Fleas.

A hairy cat that gets hot and lays on the air conditioning vents.

Hair balls on the carpet.

Cat hair all over furniture and clothing.
