Bob Margolin played guitar in Muddy Waters’ Band from 1973-’80. That alone earned him a forever spot in the “Who’s Who” of blues musicians. But it didn’t stop there.
He won a W.C. Handy Award in 2005 for guitar and played guitar as a guest on two 2008 Grammy Award nominated albums in the Traditional Blues category: Koko Taylor's Old School and Kenny Wayne Shepherd's Ten Days Out.
Margolin can be seen standing beside Muddy Waters and The Band in The Last Waltz, the classic music documentary. Margolin explains, “As it happened, only one camera was operating during our performance, zooming in or out, and since I was standing right next to Muddy, I was in every shot while he sang a powerful “Mannish Boy.” Now, when the movie is shown on TV, everyone I speak to tells me, “I saw you on TV!” for a few days. Then they tell me I looked scared, happy, mad, excited, or bored, or however they would have felt in my place.” Bob was definitely paying attention as his guitar and vocals today will attest.
Since the ‘90s, he has also recorded albums for the Powerhouse, Alligator, and Blind Pig labels. He writes a regular column for Blues Revue magazine and contributes to BluesWax.com online magazine.
Bob’s recent accomplishments include: Nominated for two 2008 Blues Music Awards: Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year and Best instrumentalist - Guitar; Listed in Rolling Stone as one of the top 25 albums of 2007: Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down (Sony/BMG/Legacy) -Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, and James Cotton. This album is also nominated for a Blues Music Award in the Best Historical Album category. Bob also has played on, produced or consulted on, and written liner notes for four reissues of Muddy Waters’ albums on the Sony/Legacy label. He appears on the Muddy Waters Classic Concerts DVD, playing in 1977 with Muddy and writing liner notes for the DVD.
In today’s Blues music scene, Bob Margolin is carrying on the tradition with a full schedule of recordings, festivals, concerts, and club appearances.
As Bob explains, “All the music I’ve listened to and played, all the experience onstage, and all of the fine musicians I’ve worked with have left their mark on me, and are obvious when I play now. On the bandstand, I play what feels right at the moment, whether it’s featuring my original songs, telling stories, joking and talking with the audience, or just playing for the dancers. I like to be ‘professional’ in terms of responsibility and competence, but past that, I am a musician playing for my friends.”
Joining Bob Margolin for this tour of Colorado is the Delta Sonics featuring Al Chesis on Harmonica; one of Denver's finest blues bands.
A Music Company Inc. has brought Bob Margolin to the Pikes Peak region several times but this will be his very first performance at the Crystola Roadhouse” explains Amy Whitesell, promoter of the show. “With his track record of great shows and the reputation the Crystola Roadhouse has been getting with the shows we’ve been presenting there, this should be a packed house.”
