Harlem Wizards to Play Falcon Nation for Fundraiser

David Paul of Brooklyn, N.Y., helps first grader Derek Brown, 7, spin a basketball Jan. 23 at Meridian Ranch Elementary School in Falcon School District 49. Paul is one of six performers from the Harlem Wizards who'll challenge Falcon Nation, a basketball team of students and teachers, during an evening game at Falcon High School. The Harlem Wizards will showcase their unique athletic talents and teamwork with basketball-handling tricks, unconventional dunks and comedic engagement. "We put the fun in fundraising, said Paul, while touring schools. "We want to get the students all riled up about the game tonight." Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets cost $15. The game starts at 7 p.m. Proceeds benefit Falcon High School's basketball team, offsetting costs associated with jerseys, equipment, camps and tournaments. According to Paul, the Harlem Wizards visited more than 1,200 schools last year, while playing more than 300 games for school fundraisers.

"They beat us of course, but we had some students who played really well," said Randy Hinson, Falcon High School athletic director, describing the 15-member Falcon Nation team. It combined students, parents, teachers and staff members from several schools.

Hinson says more than 1,000 people watched Falcon Nation take on six players from the Harlem Wizards, a game coordinated by Greg Cox, boy’s basketball coach. The event raised roughly $3,500 for the Falcon High School basketball program.

During the game, the Harlem Wizards demonstrated impressive basketball tricks and talents, including full-court shots, quick-thinking passes, extraordinary handling and high-flying slam dunks, said Hinson. After each quarter, the audience was encouraged to participate in energetic dances and contests.

The Harlem Wizards have helped Falcon High School's athletic department raise funds for three consecutive years.
