Guy Bennett, Suicide Prevention Partnership trainer, uses yarn to connect students commenting about difficult situations and stress mitigation techniques Nov. 27 at Falcon High School in Falcon School District 49. During several guided discussions for ninth grade students, Bennett explained that everyone is capable of considering suicide when overwhelmed by stress. Bennett, whose son died of self-inflicted injuries at 17 years old in February 2002, encouraged more open dialogue about depression, while rejecting the idea that talking about suicide causes suicidal tendencies. "You will not put the idea into their head," he said. "Talking about suicide helps save lives." The presentations were coordinated by the school's peer mediation group, a collection of tenth, eleventh and twelfth graders who help promote safe educational environments.
