Melissa Burkenbine laughs with her son, fourth grader Kai Holdridge, 10, while playing a "multiplication war" card game Jan. 31 at Evans International Elementary School in Falcon School District 49. After dropping two cards, the first to multiply the facing numbers wins the hand, said Burkenbine, during math night. Jenny Breeding, International Baccalaureate coordinator, said the school's educators are focused on forging stronger home-school connections. "We want to communicate with parents about what their children are doing in schools," said Breeding. Parents learned about grade-specific teaching techniques that may help their children exceed academic standards in math. "When parents are in school, it communicates to their children how important school is -- the kids get so excited."
