Jerry Ackerman of McCordsville, Ind., prompts third grader Brody Harlow, 8, to act aggressive Jan. 9, during an anti-bullying presentation at Woodmen Hills Elementary School in Falcon School District 49. To equip kindergarten-fifth grade students to combat bullying in their schools and communities, Ackerman presented a mix of comedy, respect and roll playing exercises at Woodmen Hills Elementary School and Falcon Elementary School in Peyton, Colo. "I encourage kids who don't feel part of the issue to become part of the solution," said Ackerman, a father of five children, aged 1-13. "There are a lot of bystanders who are not getting picked on and don't feel part of the problem — and they are." After three years as a seventh grade teacher and seven years as a youth pastor, Ackerman started touring the United States to discuss leadership tactics and life changes. During the past four years, he's visited more than 300 schools, where most of his discussions have focused on minimizing bullying by building compassion.
