First graders Kemper Daron, 6, and Hope Browning, 6, mix oatmeal recipes Nov. 14 during a breakfast picnic at Stetson Elementary School in Falcon School District 49. Several students were recording video explanations of their recipes as part of an oatmeal challenge for "Fuel Up to Play 60," a program founded by the National Dairy Council and NFL, which encourages students to eat healthy and complete 60 minutes of exercise every day. They're competing for Super Bowl tickets and autographed footballs. Stetson Elementary School is following a national model for coordinated school health, as well as the Pike's Peak Region Healthy Schools Initiative. According to the Food Research and Action Center, studies have shown that students who eat breakfast show improvements in math and reading scores, as well as speed and memory in cognitive tests.
