Brianna Lang, 8, and Diane Castro, food service assistant, serve cinnamon toast and rolls Nov. 14 during a breakfast picnic at Stetson Elementary School in Falcon School District 49. Brianna, a second grader at Falcon Elementary School, helped serve the school's monthly breakfast picnic, which encourages participation in its breakfast program. Children who wouldn't otherwise eat breakfast can arrive at school 30 minutes early for a bowl of cereal or an entrée-based meal, costing $1.05 for students and $1.75 for adults. Stetson Elementary School is following a national model for coordinated school health, as well as the Pike's Peak Region Healthy Schools Initiative. According to the Food Research and Action Center, studies have shown that students who eat breakfast show improvements in math and reading scores, as well as speed and memory in cognitive tests.
