Zuzu Acrobats Show Students Talents, Culture

Zuzu Acrobats help third grader Latiana Childress, 8, clear a limbo bar Feb. 20 at Evans International Elementary School in Falcon School District 49. The five-person team from Mombasa, Kenya, exhibited talents in gymnastics, jump roping, limbo dancing and chair balancing. "We show them what we can do," said Hamisi Kitole, acrobat leader, "and make sure they don't try it at home." Aside from acrobatics, they offered language lessons in Swahili, such as counting numbers and exchanging greetings. They explained "hakuna matata," or "no worries," a phrase made famous by the animated movie "The Lion King." The students attend an International Baccalaureate world school. Its IB Primary Years Program teaches inquiry, interdisciplinary skills and global citizenry.
