Chickens in the City

I grew up listening to Chickenman on the radio, "He's everywhere!  He's everywhere!"  Chickenman was inspired by another superhero, Batman; Chickenman stuck terror in the heart of criminals everywhere.  It's has been a long time since I thought much about chickens and superheroes.  But on Saturday we took the "Take a Peak Chicken Coup Tour" right here in Colorado Springs.  Thirty-six chicken coops were listed on the self-guided tour along with live animals, fresh eggs, and real life chicken…See More

Following is a Neighborhood Watch email I sent about 4PM:A water main has broken near the top of Oak Valley Drive - break probably occurred around 320PM on Saturday, December 29, 2012.CS Fire Department has blocked the street, a good section of the road is about to collapse.Utilities is sending a crew to search for the turn off value.  Then Utilities will find the break, dig up the area, and fix it.   Utilities said to expect the water to be off "for several hours."  I expect it will be 24…See More

Recipe for Feeding the Homeless in Colorado Springs

Start with nine round tables; place them within easy access of the homeless and the poor in Colorado Springs - downtown, Acacia Park, in front of the bandstand.  Add three rectangular tables and some chairs.  Position three bibles on each round table; place clothes and food on the rectangular tables (separate).  Announce the rules:  no fighting, respect and listen to my friend.  Stir in a 10-minute sermon and a 30-second prayer.  Open the food line. This is how Vanguard Church feeds the…See More

Toys for Tots Native American Program December 2011

Colorado Springs was well represented at the 2011 Toys for Tots Native American Program toy giveaway on the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT) reservation near Parker, Arizona last week.  Bill Stanley (USMC 1966-1970 and volunteer photographer for the program) and Rita Steinhauer (longtime Native American advocate) met up with the California contingent of retired Marines to distribute several thousand toys and stocking stuffers plus hundreds of books to deserving children on the…See More

Springs Financial Success Story

I love to hear money success stories.  Here's one about a 23-year old, single mom who owns her home and has no consumer debt.  She lives in Colorado Springs; let's call her Jessica. Two years ago Jessica's Mom bought her a Dave Ramsey Financial Kit which included 13 weekly one-hour video sessions at a local church.  Her Mom wanted Jessica to save for the future.  Jessica was inspired by the course and decided to get rid of her debt and start out fresh.  Her debt consisted of several thousand…See More

Change the Way You Think About Investing

I am a Money Coach and developments over the past three years have caused me to tweak my investment advice.  A financial meltdown has caused the worst recession since the Great Depression, and we now see an embarrassingly dysfunctional government that reduces confidence in our economy.   Here are five differences in how I recommend my clients invest their hard-earned money:1 - Better define "stocks."  Before the recession I recommended no more than 50% U.S. stocks plus 10% foreign stocks in…See More

A Refugee Family from Africa Buys a Home in Colorado Springs.

Last week I went to a house warming here in Colorado Springs.  It was a truly extraordinary event.  Here's the story.About four years ago, one of my clients suggested I be a citizen journalist for the Gazette and write a story on refugees from Africa.  My client was a volunteer English teacher for several African families who had originally come from Burundi in Central Africa and had been shuttled from refugee camp to refugee camp for years.  The UN certified them and the U.S accepted them as…See More

Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo

Go to the Rodeo!  That's our advice.  We watched some very brave people do so remarkable and dangerous things.  To my list of adventures never to try, please add bronco busting and bull riding.  The event of the night:  Wild Cow Milking - you must see it to believe it.  Military charities reap the benefit from your attendance.  Enjoy some pics.See More

Have You Ever Visited Palmer Lake, the Village?

Today my girlfriend took me to the Palmer Lake City Hall for the Father's Day Ice Cream Social.  Never mind that my GPS missed the City Hall and park by a couple of blocks. The pie and ice cream was free (donations accepted).  It was a neat time in a part of Palmer Lake I've never seen before. There were five kinds of fruit pie, each one offered with a generous scoop of ice cream.  There was bluegrass music at the gazebo compliments of the Jessum Buds.  There were kids and dogs and Dads and…See More
