Home Buyers Beware, Home Sellers Beware, Your Realtor May Not Be on Your Side

I am downsizing and plan to put my Rockrimmon house on the market in the Spring of 2015.  My (former) Realtor told me that "location, location, location" has been replaced by "price and pizzazz" and that the price must come down 5% every 30 days.  Pizzazz as in swinging lights in the kitchen and multiple pillows on staged beds.  My reply, "Buyers are not that stupid."A friend, who is selling her home, told me that Realtors only care about their commission and the faster they receive it, the…See More

Parents' Weekend at The Air Force Academy

Val and Cheri Fogelberg of Merced, California visited Colorado Springs and the Air Force Academy over Labor Day weekend 2013.  It was parents' weekend at the Academy.  Their son Brett is a freshman, a 4th class cadet commonly referred to as a doolie (from the Greek word duolos which means slave or servant).  The Fogelbergs found Colorado Springs to be "absolutely beautiful" and concluded that the Air Force Academy is not easy (an idea reinforced by an unnamed doolie). The Fogelbergs along…See More

Dragon Boat Festival

This past weekend tens of thousands of Coloradoans attended the 13th annual Dragon Boat Festival at Sloan's Lake Park in Denver.  The main feature was dragon boat races, something I have never heard of, and thus the need to see and learn and have fun.Overall it was an Asian culture event with food, entertainment, a huge marketplace, as well as dignitaries (including Denver's mayor) and kids and fun. What is a dragon boat race and why do they have them?  The history goes back several thousand…See More

Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Since Red Rock Canyon Open Space was purchased by the City of Colorado Springs in 2003 I have often hiked there with my friends and my dogs.  Last Friday, however, was the first time I visited Red Rock with a group of people for an interpretive hike.  Whether hiking with a group or a friend or two, I strongly recommend a visit to this place of wonders (Route 24 near 31st Street). The group hike was sponsored by Pillar of "Life Long Learning" fame (719 633-4991).  Our guides were Steven Wade…See More

Territory Days 2013

Memorial Day weekend saw the 38th annual celebration of "Territory Days" in historic Old Colorado City May 25-27, 2013.  Territory Days because the Colorado territorial legislature made Colorado City the first Territorial Capital in 1862.  Colorado City was founded in 1859, the first permanent town in the Pikes Peak region.  The streets are laid out now just as they were long ago.Thousands throng the streets for three days seeking food, entertainment, attractions, and stuff to buy.  One of…See More

Chickens in the City

I grew up listening to Chickenman on the radio, "He's everywhere!  He's everywhere!"  Chickenman was inspired by another superhero, Batman; Chickenman stuck terror in the heart of criminals everywhere.  It's has been a long time since I thought much about chickens and superheroes.  But on Saturday we took the "Take a Peak Chicken Coup Tour" right here in Colorado Springs.  Thirty-six chicken coops were listed on the self-guided tour along with live animals, fresh eggs, and real life chicken…See More

Water Main Break Rockrimmon

Following is a Neighborhood Watch email I sent about 4PM:A water main has broken near the top of Oak Valley Drive - break probably occurred around 320PM on Saturday, December 29, 2012.CS Fire Department has blocked the street, a good section of the road is about to collapse.Utilities is sending a crew to search for the turn off value.  Then Utilities will find the break, dig up the area, and fix it.   Utilities said to expect the water to be off "for several hours."  I expect it will be 24…See More

Improving the Gazette - Is it Possible?

I submitted the following suggestions to the Gazette in response to "Asking for Feedback."  The email was returned because "address couldn't be found."  Please add that to my suggestions.Improving the Gazette - The good news is you have many opportunities to improve - the bad news is you have a long way to go.Here are just a few suggestions:            More news is better.  Take a look at the Gazette from 25, 50, 100 years ago.  You will see that page one has more words, more information, more…See More

Recipe for Feeding the Homeless in Colorado Springs

Start with nine round tables; place them within easy access of the homeless and the poor in Colorado Springs - downtown, Acacia Park, in front of the bandstand.  Add three rectangular tables and some chairs.  Position three bibles on each round table; place clothes and food on the rectangular tables (separate).  Announce the rules:  no fighting, respect and listen to my friend.  Stir in a 10-minute sermon and a 30-second prayer.  Open the food line. This is how Vanguard Church feeds the…See More

Toys for Tots Native American Program December 2011

Colorado Springs was well represented at the 2011 Toys for Tots Native American Program toy giveaway on the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT) reservation near Parker, Arizona last week.  Bill Stanley (USMC 1966-1970 and volunteer photographer for the program) and Rita Steinhauer (longtime Native American advocate) met up with the California contingent of retired Marines to distribute several thousand toys and stocking stuffers plus hundreds of books to deserving children on the…See More

Springs Financial Success Story

I love to hear money success stories.  Here's one about a 23-year old, single mom who owns her home and has no consumer debt.  She lives in Colorado Springs; let's call her Jessica. Two years ago Jessica's Mom bought her a Dave Ramsey Financial Kit which included 13 weekly one-hour video sessions at a local church.  Her Mom wanted Jessica to save for the future.  Jessica was inspired by the course and decided to get rid of her debt and start out fresh.  Her debt consisted of several thousand…See More

Change the Way You Think About Investing

I am a Money Coach and developments over the past three years have caused me to tweak my investment advice.  A financial meltdown has caused the worst recession since the Great Depression, and we now see an embarrassingly dysfunctional government that reduces confidence in our economy.   Here are five differences in how I recommend my clients invest their hard-earned money:1 - Better define "stocks."  Before the recession I recommended no more than 50% U.S. stocks plus 10% foreign stocks in…See More

Colorado Springs Balloon Festival 2013

Monday was Labor Day 2013, and it was a beautiful day to see the balloons rise at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs.  Parking was easy, all the kids were cute, and everyone had a camera to mark the event.  My goal was to include the spectators in the photos as the balloons did their thing.  Enjoy some…

Air Force Football and All Its Pageantry is Back

The Air Force Academy played its first football game of the season on Saturday, August 31, 2013.  It was a win for the team and a win for the fans.  Air Force pageantry is back, all except the flyover which was squelched by sequestration.

Enjoy some photos by Bill Stanley and Rita Steinhauer.  Sorry the falcon moved too fast for a…

Blodgett Peak Trails Are Open Again - Hurray!

Posted on September 2, 2013 at 7:36pm 0 Comments

Hi, my name is Zorro.  I'm a 2 1/2 year old Doberman mix.  I love the outdoors and I love to hike.  That's why I am soooo glad that the trails at Blodgett Peak Open Space are open again.  Hurray!  I was almost first in line to go climbing and running and smelling this last Saturday.  There were TV people and hikers and many smiling faces.  It seems like the place has been closed for half my life.

My Dad and I had a really good time checking out our favorite…
