By now most everyone in Colorado Springs knows about Old Colorado City.  150,000 of them walked through its westside shopping center during the 36th annual “Territory Days” over Memorial Day Weekend and thousands drive through it by car every day. B…

Naw. I doubt if any newspaper outlet in Colorado Springs would carry the Wash Post. Last time I looked for a Wall Street Journal in the racks across from the Pikes Peak/Tejon Banks there were none. So I had to go into the Antlers to find it. Once th…

Nice, I uploaded the photograph of the my Bennington Flag to the Washingon Post which asked for pictures about what people were doing-seeing on the 4th of July. So among all the spectacular photos of fireworks displays and big public events, they ra…

About 33 years ago, 1977 when we bought our house on 24th Street. The year after the 1976 Bicentennial.

Very cool flag, Dave. And it's a great day to fly it. Did you start flying it every year on Fourth of July 34 years ago or did that tradition start later?

When I want to fly a flag in front of my Old Colorado City home any of 364 days a year, I fly the standard 50 Star American 'Old Glory' flag.   But on the 4th of July I always fly the 13 white star 'Bennington Flag' with the number '76 in the cen…

Hey Mr. Dave ... congrats on the plaque, which I'd never seen and am quite glad to know about. I knew you were a local treasure, just didn't realize it was officially proclaimed! Cool story on the horse alleys.

Why are there unusual shops along Colorado Avenue that are 5 feet wide and 100 feet deep between 24th and 26th Street in Old Colorado City? They, and at least one open space in the 2500 block West Colorado, are the famous Horse Alleys of Color…

Loved getting a little history lesson about the Meadow Muffins building, Dave. I also wanted to give you a heads up that this story will be in tomorrow's Westside print edition. Thanks!

By the way. Some people asked me which is the 'Templeton' Building that the Waycott was built to resemble. Its 2502 West Colorado Ave, right across 25th Street to the west of the Waycott building. Here is a picture of both.

Yeah, thanks Bob. I got a lot more from my 35 years studying the history of the original Colorado City and the Westside - after the Pioneer's Museum has spent the same amount of time ignoring that history while it hero-worships General Palmer and th…

There is a classic line in the popular 1950’s opera “The Ballad of Baby Doe” that first played in the still-standing Central City Opera House . The line was “We sure need culture here in Colorado!” We sure did and still do. But did you know that eve…

When you get to the e=mc2 of that speed 'Security is Development' - ponder it. It now, 50 years later is THE strategy by the West for defeating Insurgents everywhere.

Pretty good Doug! Now how about doing a chalk rendition of Hedy Lamarr - the love of my life actress of the 1940s! Who invented what you youngsters know today as Wi-Fi!

Should the Internet be a Right?

Should the Internet be a Right?

I wrote 30 years ago when I set up the first, free dial-up public access Computer Bulletin-Board in Colorado Springs (Rogers Bar) to discuss and debate local politics, that personal digital networking would become a world revolution in human communications while fostering ‘electronic democracy’. It is doing that, in spades. Nearly two billion people are now connected to the Internet, while various forms of digital wireless are now connecting up t

Adventure Training Turned Vietnam Era Soldiers into Mechanized Infantrymen

This is a piece I wrote for a recent Fort Carson Mountain Post Historical Center Newsletter

There was a problem facing the Fort Carson command in 1968, after the legendary 4th Infantry Division was organized
and converted into the 4th Mechanized Infantry Division. Carson had only been a boots-on-the-g… Continue

And in case you or your wife did not pick up on it, We OCCHS, IF the city closes down the Westside Center the end of March, because it does not accept that contract proposal (no reason it should) we will RETURN all donated fund that went to our OCCHS 'Save Our Westside Community Center Fund' to the donor. We are holding those funds until the city approves that contract, and we transmit those funds to the non-profit entity which will operate the center (and will be grateful for our donated funds) after which we will RECEIPT to all donors their donation so that they THEN can take it off their income taxes.

I am personally following through on this. After all I donated $1,000 myself, and will not see that money go down the drain.

Now the WALC group which wants to garden in that huge lot behind the center, will be paying its own way. I think they have their act together.

There may be chaos in the city, but some of us who fought two wars long where the chaos was pretty deadly, don't take donations for Westside causes lightly. We know when to go to war. So buy some more chicken wings and join the Old Colorado City Historical Society, one of the more successful organizations in town. (we are fiscally solvent even if the city owned Pioneers Museum is not)

Don't give up on we who went into the campaign to save the Westside History Center. We are not as dumb as we appear. (1) What you don't know is that a strong organization, backed by an Anonymous Foundation (I know who they are and what they are willing to do) met the city Parks deadline yesterday for a contract proposal (RFP) to OPERATE the Westside Center and all its Programs not only for the last 9 months of this year, but two more years fully funded. (2) unless something major happens that organization will appear before City Council probably on 9 March which I expect will 'approve' their proposal as a contract. (3) the Foundation want the organization to raise some money as a match to its grant, after the first 9 months (4) It is quite capable of doing that (5) Our lil Old Colo City History Society has raised $5,365 as of Friday (and your wife's contribution if it went through our history society was appreciated) AND when the city approves that contract, we will transmit all the funds to THAT approved operator of the Westside to add to ITS fund raising for the SOLE PURPOSE of going into the operation of the Westside Center. (they have agreed to certify that to us). So it will help them, help the Foundations' match requirement. We are not talking about nickles and dimes.

Last night after returning from the contentment of wings at Meadow Muffins, I pondered the chaos happening in our city. More specifically, the West End. It would appear that there is no hope of the City being honest about community centers and the dismal distrust that births continuance of lies. My friend and wife explained to me that last week they had made a donation toward the effort of keeping the centers open to keep them open in the traditional sense of having activities for people. It was not a large amount but, enough to contribute to the cause, with city staff claiming that there is no money in the budget for running them. Then, by the end of yesterday they get news that came from the Westside Center meeting that center director Kates is GIVING another organization, WALC $1,000 dollars to have a water meter installed. Considering there is allegedly no funds for centers and there are other garden organizations like PPUG who have the financing for this project, how in the h*** are we supposed to trust anyone collecting donations. I've stated before that this center has roughly .25 million in their budget. With theses types of actions on behalf of Kates and his good ol' boys, NO WAY will I remotely think of giving them anything. Instead, let the non-profits run it and ensure the entire community benefits without this political campaign of draining the average income or lower people of money and the quality of life. A big fat booooo to the fundraising effort built on lies.
