Handicap Parking FINE INCREASES...

I have touched on this subject before I thought, but I cannot find any thing. ANYWAYS, I have breaking news to let out! But first, let's back up a bit:From my side of the fence (handicapped and holder of placard/plates), I see people parking illegally in these spots all over town. Many times I hear, "Oh, I'm just going in for a minute," or "yeah, so?" Well, according to the law, pulling in and stopping in one of these spaces is considered parking and you just earned yourself a $100 fine. From…See More

Tuskegee Airman Gets the Pomp and Circumstance

Mr. Franklin Macon, a member of the Colorado Springs High School Class of 1942, had finished his senior year of high school. He just didn't get the chance to go across the stage (due to car trouble) and enjoy the pageantry that went with graduating. That is, until he “joined” the Graduating Class of 2014 at Palmer High School (CSHS was re-named to Palmer in 1960) and got his chance to go through the ceremony on stage. At last year's Veterans Day celebration at Palmer, Franklin was there and I…See More

Indian Mascots vs Common Sense...

I have been reading various articles/stories in the last month or 2 that really get my goat...I have seen where in some places, in order for a school to have/keep a mascot depicting an Indian in some way or another, they have to have a letter from an Indian tribe give their 'blessing' as it were, to use it...Sad to say, I did not know our mascot's history when I was going to Palmer in the early/mid 70's. I just knew that it was a cool looking Indian that had a big nose - that's all. No jokes,…See More

Green Beret Letter Takes Stand

I don't write much in my blog, but I viewed this and came away with a feeling of "this has to be shared." I have a few thoughts at the end:The Green Berets, the US Army Special Forces, have a new open letter on the Second Amendment. Over 1100 have signed it so far. In the US Army, it is no secret that the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), United States Code (USC titles 10, 2, and 18), Department of Defense (DOD) directives, and strict Military Guidelines limit, if not forbid, military…See More

CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association Turns 30!

To the best of our knowledge, this is the second alumni association. The first one was started in 1894 and went through 1918.The CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association was started in 1984 at the behest of the school, itself. Then principal, Jamie McClendon asked for help from the alumni concerning problems they were having at the time.…See More

Keep Veteran's Day as D11 School Holiday?

In view of the fact that D11 had sent out a survey to a certain number of people, among other things it was asking if Veteran's Day should be kept as a school holiday in the calendar. I was sent a copy of said survey, but didn't answer until the following day. By that time, the survey was closed. In response to that fact, I sent this email to various people at the D11 Admin Building:To All D-11 Board of Education Directors, the Superintendent, staff and members of the Calendar Committee -I am a…See More

"Make a Wish" And More at Palmer

Especially at this time of year, we all hear about caring and giving. The student council and the rest of the students at Palmer High School, are busy doing just that. There is a 5 year old boy named Conner, who made a "Wish" and Palmer is doing its best to help make that wish come true. There recently was a fund raiser at the…See More

"From Hell to Hall of Famer: Best of Times" Book by Tom Aiken

Tom sent me a copy of his book. This was for two reasons: to read and to have on hand at Palmer’s Homecoming Brunch (Sep 7 at Palmer Eagle Wing / Weber Street entrance), where there will be numerous alumni and lots of items of memorabilia for sale, as always. This is also the time when new members of the Alumni Hall of Fame (of which Tom is a member) are inducted. Perhaps my reading of his book could help spread the word, on his unique and thought-provoking story. Since I was born in the…See More

Frank Montera Dedication

Adorning the walls of the inner room of the CSHS/Palmer Alumni Association Historical Room, are memories and pictures of former band directors. These date back to when Palmer was known as Colorado Springs High School and the first band director from the early 1900’s, Fred Fink. There are others from the 50’s and 60’s: Gus Jackson & Norm Smith, then on into the 80’s and 90’s and Tom Kelly. The 70’s decade is joining the wall, with the dedication of having Frank G. Montera added to said wall;…See More

Last September, she was crowned as Palmer High School's Homecoming Queen. This past Tuesday, Tessa Snow was crowned again, in the America's Homecoming Queen Pageant, at the state level, defeating about a dozen others. Congratulations, Tessa! A Legend Passes

It is with very heavy heart, this I forward the information that Mr. Frank G. Montera, the band director for 10 years at Palmer High School, has passed away this week. He came to us from Walsenburg, CO where (as I told him) when I learned this blurted out, "Oh, great! We're getting a potato farmer!" Boy was I wrong.    This man was a ball of fire. We all learned of his passion for his craft - music & teaching music and quickly. He started the band off in marching competitions, in Stage /…See More

THE PUMPKINS ARE OUT!

Richard Plush and his family have been treating the community to works of art for the past 25 years. Each year they carve pumpkins. I'm sorry - works of art! Sometimes these jack o' lanterns are in the 100 pound range and even the 200 pound range!  There have been tributes each year, to those who have passed away or a…See More

Teddy on Being an American...

Posted on February 7, 2012 at 7:10am 0 Comments

In a speech given in 1916, former President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt spoke of how he believed that “immigrants taking up residence in the U. S. should assimilate into American society as quickly as possible, learn the English language, eschew (get rid of) hyphenated national identities (e.g. “Italian-American”) and declare their primary allegiance to the United States of America”. Later on in 1917 he said, “We must have in this country but one flag and for the…

Many of us probably have received an email or some other tidbit of information concerning some of these items, but what have we as individuals ever done or thought about doing, concerning them?

There is the price of gas: There is more…
