Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

Is your car making strange noises?  Your honest accurate service advisor and/or mechanic can help you diagnose the problem, but they need your help.  You can expedite the diagnosis procedure by relaying what the noise sounds like, exactly when it happens and what part of the car you think it might be coming from.  Often, we will have one of our technicians drive with you in your car, so that we can be sure that we repair the particular noise that you are hearing.  A few examples:CHIRP:  A sound…See More

Are you firing on all cylinders? Time to change your spark plugs?

Does your engine “miss” or hesitate upon starting?  Has your gas mileage decreased over time?  Even though newer vehicles do not require regular “tune-ups” because of on-board computers and electronic ignition, your spark plugs still need regular replacement.  Each spark plug is a high voltage connector between two contact points.  When you turn the key, the spark from the spark plugs ignites the fuel, thereby starting your engine.  How long your spark plugs will last is dependent upon the type…See More

Stop in the name of....safety!

Will your car stop when you need it to?  Are you hearing squealing or grinding when you step on the brake pedal?  Do you have to push your brake pedal in further than you used to?  Do you feel or hear vibrations or clunking sounds?  These are all indicators of impending brake failure.  To keep you and your family safe, brakes should be inspected every other oil change, or about twice/year.  All brake pads, shoes, rotors and drums are designed to wear down with use and require periodic…See More

Don't buy a lemon!!

How do you know if you are getting a good deal, or buying yourself a set of problems in that used car you are considering?   A Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) by an ASE certified technician is good insurance against buying an expensive set of repair or maintenance bills along with your new, used car.  The technician will review systems and framework, and put you in a good bargaining position because you will know what is wrong, and what is right, with the car.  A PPI will include:Review of…See More

Toot'n Your Own Horn...what to do??

We’ve all been there…sitting at the stop light…a cazillion things on your mind, the light turns green, you don’t notice but, the caffeine crazed, late-for-his-meeting dude sitting six inches off your bumper, with the reaction time of a rattlesnake, knows exactly how to deal with your obvious incompetence…lay on that HORN!!! And what did he accomplish?  Well, you’re teed off and, more likely than not, you’re gonna spread that special feeling!  So…before you rain on someone else’s parade, let’s…See More

Curb Hits and Potholes - Tis' the season!

My sons think drifting can be fun, but not when tires hit a curb while sliding off the icy roads!  Small curb hits and running over the numerous potholes in our roads can alter the alignment on your front or rear tires.  Even small (degree) changes in alignment can result in uneven wear of your tires, and a pulling to one side of your steering wheel.  Damage can occur to your wheel (bend or crack) and/or in the tire itself.  A bent wheel can result in annoying vibrations and premature tire…See More

Fresh Ink: Fresh Air! Don't like what you're smelling? Check your Cabin Filter!

Many people are not even aware that their car has a cabin filter, let alone know what it does.  Most cars built in the past 15 years have a filter, usually located under the car dash. The sole purpose of this cabin filter is to remove the dust and pollen from the air entering your heating, air conditioning, and ventilation system before you breathe it, and help to eliminate noxious odors.  It serves the same function as the furnace filter in your home.  Not only can a dirty cabin filter affect…See More

A Penny's Worth of Prevention...

A penny’s worth of prevention…..The only surface on your car that connects you to the road is your tires.  With icy winter weather just around the corner, sufficient tire tread is essential to keep your car riding the road safely.  Tire tread depth should be greater than 2/32”.  An easy way to measure tire tread depth is to place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire, with Lincoln’s head down.  If a part of Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread, you have greater than 2/32” tread…See More

Rudolph with Your Nose so Bright, Have you had your Headlights Polished Tonight??

In these dark days of winter, have you found that you aren’t seeing the road ahead as well as you should?  Do you feel like you are driving in a haze?  You may think that one of your headlight bulbs has burned out, but it could be that your headlight lens itself is cloudy and scratched.   Most modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic, which is lighter than glass, and generally more resistant to stone chips and cracks.  However, over time, they can become severely clouded and…See More

The Corner Mechanic: "Keeping Your Cool in the Cold!"

Most of us know we need to check the oil level in our vehicles on a regular basis (you know that, right??!!), but many of us forget to check our antifreeze level and condition regularly.  Cooling system failure is one of the most frequent causes of engine-related breakdowns, and the resulting repairs can be extremely costly.  Did you know your engine produces 4500 degrees of cylinder heat when it is burning fuel?  The correct combination of water, antifreeze and coolant additives is essential…See More

All Charged Up??

With the cold weather upon us, be sure your battery is in adequate condition.  As it gets colder outside, your battery becomes less efficient while your engine demands even more cranking amperage to start.  All batteries wear out with time, and a dead or weak battery can leave you stranded with no warning! Is there anything worse than the sound of your car trying to start on a cold winter morning, when it just does not have enough power??  Modern vehicles have many more electrical components…See More

Hello Rondi (and Ted) and welcome to csfreshink.com! Thanks for posting the first Corner Mechanic, and apologies if I wasn't clear that I'd prefer you post it each week on the site. I think it could also be beneficial for people to see it on the site, and everything we run has been on the site, as well.
