SMHS Forensics Team Excited About Nationals

Small but mighty. That’s the perfect way to describe the St. Mary’s High School forensics team. The National Forensic League’s 2013 National Speech & Debate Tournament begins on Sunday, June 16, in Birmingham, Ala., and the St. Mary’s team is excited about the competition. Only 3 percent of all forensics competitors in the nation qualify for nationals. This year four SMHS team members qualified. Joe McAdams, Colton Calandrella, and Eliana Wackerman qualified in Congressional Debate, and…See More

Lacrosse Team Makes Time to Serve

High school is about more than books and extracurricular activities for students at St. Mary’s High School. Community service hours are required for graduation and a part of life at St. Mary’s that students take very seriously. So seriously, that even a competitive lacrosse season doesn’t stop service projects. The 2013 season was the best ever for the Pirates lacrosse team. The team finished 9-6 in its division and 3-2 in conference, which led to the team’s first visit to the playoffs. And…See More

Two SMHS Students Take National Chemistry Exam

One might be tempted to believe that a smaller private high school can’t compete with larger schools when it comes to science. But judging by the accomplishments of two of St. Mary’s High School AP Chemistry students, that assumption would be wrong. This year SMHS juniors Kelly Heiniger and Miranda Schene both qualified for the second round of the National Chemistry Olympiad test when their scores on the local test placed them in the top 15 scores in the state. Each school is only allowed to…See More

Two SMHS Seniors Offered Boettcher Scholarships

For the first time two seniors from St. Mary’s High School have been offered Boettcher Scholarships. This spring both Ben Cloud and Paulina Menichiello were offered one of the prestigious scholarships. Cloud accepted the scholarship and will attend the University of Colorado in Boulder next fall. Menichiello, although honored to have been selected as a Boettcher recipient, has declined the scholarship. For Cloud the moment he learned of the scholarship, while checking his family’s mail, was a…See More

SMHS Graduate Heads to Ukraine for Missions Work

Sometimes life takes you in unexpected directions. For Sarah Palma, a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, that includes spending two weeks in the Ukraine at the end of May with the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). Palma feels the trip is responding to God’s call for her life. And that means doing something she had admired in others, but never saw herself doing. “I had always appreciated those who did missions work, as it is such an amazing calling, but I had never thought I…See More

3 Local Medical Officers Credit SMHS Education with Helping Build Successful Careers

The saying goes that it’s not where you start that counts but where you end up. And while that may be true, sometimes where you start influences where you end up. Such is the case for three high ranking medical professionals in our community. Dr. Patrick Faricy, Dr. Reginald Washington, and Dr. Joel Ernster all credit St. Mary’s High School with putting them on the path to success. While those individual paths may be different, there are commonalities in the foundations that were laid during…See More

John Suthers Returns to SMHS to Discuss Death Penalty

In youth, issues often seem black and white. But with experience comes the reality that rarely are major issues easily categorized. Students in the Current Legal Issues class at St. Mary’s High School recently heard that message from someone with great experience in those issues, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers. Suthers, a 1970 St. Mary’s graduate, spoke to the class about the death penalty in Colorado. And after he spoke, two students gained perspective on the issue. For Jaclyn…See More

Visit Day Gives Seventh Graders Opportunity to See SMHS

High school maybe two years away for seventh graders, but it’s never too early to check out a school you are interested in. That’s why St. Mary’s High School is hosting a Seventh Grade Visit Day on April 17. “Visit Days give students a chance to see St. Mary’s at the classroom level,” said Robyn Cross, director of admissions at St. Mary’s. “They get to sit in classes and really see what it’s like to be a student here.” Each spring seventh graders from any middle school start Visit Day with an…See More

Book Drive Collects Thousands of Titles for Local Organizations

Schools and books go together. But it’s likely that never in the school’s history has St. Mary’s High School been so filled with books. Children’s books and adult books numbering in the thousands are being sorted and donated to deserving local organizations. “We’ve collected between 5,000 and 6,000 books, so our first book drive was an overwhelming success,” said Robyn Cross, director of admissions and faculty adviser to the National Honor Society, which was one sponsor of the book drive. Most…See More

St. Mary's Students to Be Featured in National Institute of Health Booklet

The work that St. Mary’s High School students are doing with biochemistry and genetics is being featured in a National Institute of Health publication entitled, The Structures of Life. And for science teacher Rebecca Keith it’s an exciting turn of events. “If you grew up in a research lab, it’s your ultimate goal to be recognized by the NIH,” Keith said. “When I saw NIH on the caller ID, it was an amazing feeling. My hands were shaking I was so excited.” Senior Sean McGunigal and junior Eliana…See More

SMHS Sophomore Wins Third Place in Essay Contest

When you put your thoughts out there, you never know what will happen. For Jennifer Sanchez, a sophomore at St. Mary’s High School, it meant placing third in an essay contest sponsored by the Academy Optimist Club of Colorado Springs. The theme of this year’s contest was “How Can I Help My Friends Realize Their Value?” Sanchez entered the contest as part of a writing lab at school, and it was one of the first essays she did for the class. “I just sort of wrote about how I, as a friend, can show…See More

Two SMHS Students Place at Fifth Congressional District Art Competition

Persistence pays off. At least it has for the art students at St. Mary’s High School. Seniors Frances Galgan and Madison Hernez both earned top three honors in the 2013 Fifth Congressional District Art Competition. Galgan placed second in the acrylics category. Hernez came in third in the mixed media category. “This competition really is for the best of the best,” said Karen Simkiss, SMHS art teacher. “It’s an honor to have you work in this show.” The theme of this year’s competition was…See More

Hard work brings good results. And the 2013 St. Mary’s High School graduating class is proof of that. The 89 graduates in the class of 2013 have earned $9.7 million in college scholarships, setting a school record.

Pat Davis, SMHS counselor, said the last class that compared in size to this year’s class earned $8.8 million in scholarships. She said they are largely merit scholarships, with a few athletic scholarships included.

“Our students are going to 20…
