Newtown Tragedy...How Do We Move Forward?

For twenty-five years, we lived in Watertown, a small Connecticut town just down the road from Newtown. One doesn’t have to be a parent to weep for those young lives lost.  One doesn’t have to be a family member or friend to mourn the adults who were killed. There have been many tributes to the lives so tragically lost in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. Here’s one video that conveys its Norman Rockwell-like atmosphere…which only…See More

Connecticut School Tragedy and a Children's Christmas Story

1993…The Year of the Graduations (Junior High, High School and College)We raised our three children in a small Connecticut town less than thirty minutes from yesterday’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. For twenty-five years we lived happily and peacefully.  Our children went from elementary schools to middle schools to high schools and finally to college. They didn’t always agree with our rules…and we didn’t always agree with their behavior.  But that is part of parenting and part of…See More

Innovative Story and Craft Program for District 11 Pre-K's and Kindergartens

A new program for the District 11 Pre-K's and kindergartens is currently being offered this year.  Based on the picture books recommended in my new bookw, teachers can schedule presentations that include a story reading and a craft project.

How do you know when a program is successful?  I guess when the teacher wants you to return as soon as possible and the children don't want to go outside for recess, but would rather work on their craft project longer.:)  When I left Columbia School today, after reading Katy and the Big Snow and helping the children in Ms. Pike's kindergarten make a snow-covered road picture, I was walking on air.  As I said goodbye to the children and thanked them for having me in their classroom, one of the pupils piped up, "Today I had the most fun EVER!"

Reading is one of the most important things we can do with young children...it engages them in the world between the pages and allows them to relate their own experiences and concerns to those of the characters in the stories. In addition, reading picture books and participating positively with their children in craft projects and cooking activities helps parents build self-esteem, develop pre-literacy skills and create a life-long parent-child bond.

I'm already scheduled for three presentations next month, but I'm always happy to share my passion for picture books and uplifting young children.  I'd be happy to discuss my availability to do the SHOW ME HOW! program for local church groups or libraries...please feel free to contact me at: vivian@positiveparentalparticipation.com
