At After School University, we believe it is possible to achieve your academic goals, no matter the obstacles you may face, and we are proud to have Nadine Brown as a student who exemplifies that belief.
Forced to quit school at an early age, Nadine said, “I’ve always wanted to go back to school. It’s my dream. I didn’t get to go when I was young, so because of that, I’ve always wanted to do more.”
Nadine has been a student with After School University since September, in the Math and English Language programs. Though she works full-time, is a loving single mother of sixth grader, Malique (who recently made the Honor Roll at his school), and doesn’t currently own a car, Nadine still makes it to her classes with After School University three days a week. She is studying to take the GED so that she can have a better job, provide more for herself and her son, and give back more to her community. Nadine said, “it’s hard, because you have to work a full time job and be a single parent and go to school.”
Yet she never gives up hope. She is a constant inspiration to the instructors and staff here. As her English instructor, I see the struggles Nadine goes through and have an immense amount of respect for her and everything she is doing. She said, “the best part is that I can see myself doing better, and getting a better job when I finish. When you do more, you gain more.” Nadine is the perfect example for those who wish to go back to school, but who allow circumstance to hold them back.
When asked what advice she has for other students who want to academically excel, Nadine said, “they can do it as long as they put their mind to it. It’s hard, but they can do it. Sometimes, they don’t realize that they just have to make some sacrifices. They think they can’t do it, but you just have to start.”
In regards to her experience so far at After School University, Nadine said, “They are so welcoming and helpful with anything you need. It’s a good school to start if you want to achieve your goals.” Since she has started here, Nadine has become more confident in her knowledge and abilities and has continued to set higher goals for herself. We have no doubt that she will achieve whatever she sets her mind to.
Because of her economic situation, Nadine applied for an associate’s scholarship through Wal-Mart, where she works full time. She recently received the fantastic news that they have agreed to help her finance her dreams. We are happy to also support those dreams, and to continue to offer Nadine classes from our diverse and expanding curriculum. As Nadine said, “things can work out if you try.”
