Congratulations to High Plains Elementary School's 1st and 2nd grade students! You are Champions!!! The Academy of Life and Leadership Taekwondo formally congratulates the students of High Plains Elementary who read an astounding 5,520 books in February. Congratulations also to Ms. Jones's class for reading the most books as a classroom. Thanks to her students, Ms. Jones won taekwondo self-defense & fitness lessons!

The Academy of Life and Leadership Taekwondo (A.L.L. TKD), headed by Olympian Barb Kunkel, joined forces with parent, Ms. Karen Sulpizio, High Plains Principal, Ms. Kimberly Hollm and teachers to develop a fun reading program built on the concept of goal setting. At the beginning of the program, Master Kunkel came in to speak to the children about the process of achieving dreams. Playing focus, confidence and goal-setting games helped them more fully understand the concepts behind their reading plan. The children were challenged individually, as well as by classroom, to read as much as possible during the month of February. And read they did!

Recognition day came on Thursday, March 12th as children sat quietly, their backs straight and their hands in their laps, waiting for their names to be announced. Smiles covered the room and parents were excited to see their child hop up and yell, "Yes ma'am!" with enthusiasm and confidence as their names were called! This year, many children reached the highest possible level! Teachers, parents and A.L.L. TKD Instructors clapped and cheered as students earned varying degrees of black belt based on their performance, as well as taekwondo awards, including shirts, bears, and lessons. The program was also designed to reward not only those children who reached the highest level of achievement, but also those who had shown progress and doubled their reading from the year prior. By recognizing their efforts, these children were encouraged to continue to make progress in their reading skills and helped them feel like champions.

"Success breeds success" is a quote that holds true to this type of program planning. Success in the classroom, starting at a young age, helps children realize that they can reach their fullest potential and enables them to keep the momentum going as they grow up. Reading and taekwondo are both valuable tools for helping them develop confidence: a tool that will serve them well over the course of their lives.

One of A.L.L. TKD's missions is to develop strong leaders and champions in the home, school, community and in life. They enjoyed working with the families and teachers of High Plains and look forward to working with other schools in the community to develop CHAMPION READERS like the ones at HIGH PLAINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!
