CSFreshInk.com: Where small talk is a big deal

Looking at my EKG tape periodically reminds me of the fact that there is life after death. It serves as a great wake up call to the fact that I should enjoy my life and live it wisely. The experience of death was frightening, but only because I awoke to find the people above me in a panic, however, while I was dead, my mind was at peace. I can tell you more about what I experienced, but the most extraordinary part of my ordeal was that it taught me how to live. Death simply whitewashed the materialism from my world and painted a very simple picture for me.

For as long as I remember, I have had fainting spells. After bearing three wonderful children, the spells intensified, so I insisted that doctors diagnose the problem. They put me through a few tests, including the tilt-table test. Even though I had signed a waiver, I really had not absorbed the fact that unconsciousness can result in cardiac arrest. However, that is exactly what happened. For 23 seconds, the heart monitor spilled out a flatlined EKG and the blood pressure monitor recorded zero. I have never seen eyes so big as those of the cardiologist and assistants when I awakened on my own. They looked like they had seen a ghost!

The reason I write this story is to bring to light the concept that, in order to understand and not fear death, we must march forward and learn about life. Since that incident, I have had the opportunity to become part of an organization where I truly take an active roll in living and whose main goal is teaching about the important aspects of life. It is all in the name really, the Academy of Life and Leadership Taekwondo (A.L.L. TKD). At the age of 54, I am currently training for my 2nd degree Black Belt under Olympian Barb Kunkel and am surrounded with people who want to enrich their lives as well. The physical part of taekwondo is satisfying, of course, keeping my body healthy with a very enjoyable activity, but my experience taught me that we must be equally concerned with what we take into our hearts and minds. While studying the art of taekwondo, we are given the opportunity to focus on such things as courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and the indomitable spirit. Whether we are young or old, empowering ourselves with valuable life skills and positive experiences help us choose a fulfilling pathway.

My message to others is simple. Hold true to your heart what is important. Be concerned about the people of this earth. Use your time effectively to enrich your soul with the lessons of life, love and friendship. Your list of chores and materialistic items will be there tomorrow, but you may not. I promise you one thing, what you have in your heart and soul will be all that you take with you when it is your time to go.
