Local Business Owner "Steers" Our Community Forward

True heroes are the people who do good things without asking for attention or recognition.  I am proud to know one.

Gary Olson is the owner of Airport Automotive, a family-owned business in its 20th year, on Platte Avenue near Powers.  He is also a person who gives back to others.  Last month, in honor of Memorial Day, Gary donated 5% of the May profits from his auto repair and maintenance business to Wounded Warriors (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).

This month, Gary is participating in a car giveaway.  Not a contest for publicity or business, but a used car in good condition (thanks to his skills as a master mechanic) given away to a deserving local citizen who also believes in contributing to his or her community.  No strings attached.

The Wheels to Prosper (WheelstoProsper.com) initiative was started by a network of automotive shop owners around the country.  Wheels to Prosper awards a worthy and deserving person from the community a car that has been fully serviced and in good working condition. The selection is made from recommendations and nominations from people in the community.

On July 30th, 2011, a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited will be presented to a deserving person in the Colorado Springs area.

"I'm so fortunate, and so many folks are really struggling to make it," Olson says. "It's one small act, but hopefully others will pass it on."  There are many auto shops participating in the U.S., but Airport Automotive is the only Colorado company represented this year. A brief essay is all that is required to enter the contest, for oneself or for a friend or relative.  The only requirements to be entered into the contest are:

1. The person must live in the Colorado Springs area;

2. The person must be truly in need of the vehicle;

3. The person nominated should be active in some type of community service;

4.  The essay describing why the person deserves the vehicle must be received by July 23rd, 2011.

"Imagine life without a car or reliable transportation," Gary writes on his blog http://www.airportautomotive.com.  "In today’s world this means much more than mere inconvenience. Often one’s survival depends upon access to a vehicle. Whether it is getting to work, a job interview, or simply picking up groceries for the family, the lack of adequate transportation creates hardships and real disadvantages for those already struggling."

If you would like to nominate someone, write an essay describing why you feel they are deserving of this vehicle. Send your essay along with the nominee’s name, and available contact info to gary@airportautomotive.com. Please put “wheels to prosper” in the subject line. You may also mail your submissions to:
