Written by Barb Inlow-Childress On the surface, a Black Belt is a person who possesses a finely-honed set of skills that allow him to be considered as a person not to be taken lightly in a fight. It is a symbol of several years of hard work and excellence. It is a concrete expression of a high first level of mastery in the ancient Korean martial art of TaeKwonDo.
On a much deeper and more personal level, though, the Black Belt is an Ideal. Each person who understands this is able to bring to his journey his Faith, his Values, and what he believes in his heart of hearts to be Best about himself. The last six months of this odyssey are the Blast Furnace in which a Black Belt is truly forged. They are the Proving Ground, the Test, the Trial of classical lore.
The road to Black Belt has been the undertaking of the Heroic Quest, the bringing to the fore of the Unquenchable Spirit, the doing of Noble and Daring Deeds. It is the birthing into the world of the physical manifestation of what is Good in me. It is the unleashing of my Enthusiasm - "en" "Theos", Greek for "inspired by God".
It has also been the bringing together of Kindred Spirits, a team knit together in pursuit of a common Passion and Goal. As a group, we are striving to prove ourselves /to/ ourselves and each other, and in the process, we lift each other higher than any one of us could go alone.
